Bishops Again Shall Admonish the Priests

1. Obedience means "godlike qualities"? Is St. Paul assigning "godlike qualities" to husbands? Why is every man not a prince? Why is every human not a general? That is anarchy. Rather, God has assigned different stations in life to different people.

Hither's some info for y'all:

Having an indispensable meaning in the life of the Church building, the Sacrament of Holy Orders has a foundation from God. "And no homo taketh this honour unto himself, simply he that is chosen of God, as was Aaron." (Her.5:4). The first pastors of the Orthodox Church, the Holy Apostles, did not of themselves obtain the correct to teach, to serve the Mysteries and Sacramentals, and to administer the Holy Church; but were inspired and granted this correct by Our Lord Jesus Christ. "And when it was mean solar day, He called unto Him his disciples: and of them He chose twelve, whom too He named apostles." (St. Luke6, l3).

From the numerous disciples and followers, Christ chose only twelve of them to exist pastors of His Church building. Why? That they might constantly exist at His side learning His didactics, and to witness miracles and be thoroughly convinced that He is the Son of God who was incarnate for our salvation, And being convinced they might teach others. (St. Mark 3, 14-15).

With this purpose, Our Lord instructed the Apostles collectively and individually. "What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops." (St. Matthew 10, 27). Our Lord lived among the Apostles for twoscore days after His Resurrection and spoke to them about the Kingdom of God. He revealed to the Apostles mysteries which were non revealed to others: "it is given unto you lot to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, merely to them information technology is not given."

After, abreast the twelve apostles Christ chose 70 disciples and told all of them: "Ye take not called Me, but I have called you, and ordained y'all, that ye should get and bring forth fruit (St. John15, 16). "Equally My Father hath sent Me, even so send I you. And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained. (St. John xx, 21-23).

Duties of Pastors

Before His Ascension, Our Lord came to His Apostles and said: "All power is given unto Me in sky and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Male parent, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: educational activity them to observe all things any I have allowable y'all: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the earth. Amen." (St. Matthew28, 18-20).

With these words, Christ gave the Apostles the following powers in the Church building: 1) to teach the truths of the Faith to all nations on globe. That'due south why Orthodoxy is for all people. 2) to perform the Sacraments — Baptism, Communion, etc. "Practice this in remembrance of Me!" (Holy Eucharist) (St. Luke22, nineteen), or "Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, stewards of the mysteries of God." (I Cor. iv,1), says the Apostle near himself and other pastors of the Church: iii) to administer the Church, i.e. to govern the faithful in the paths of Christian living. (Matt.28, twenty).

After granting this power to the Apostles, we must detect that He promised them a Comforter—Spirit of truth who would be with them fifty-fifty until the end of the World. On the solar day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit did come upon them in the course of peppery tongues and they went forth and began the work of the Church building, and thousands were baptised even in ane day. At present, since Christ offered to be with them until the stop of the world, and they as mortal men were prone to death, it follows that Our Lord had instructed the Apostles to ordain successors to inherit churchly powers even until the finish of the world. The Apostles did this everywhere they established churches by the laying on of easily. This power of ordination is called—apostolic succession and tin be traced to our day in an unbroken line of succession in the Orthodox Church. This apostolic succession will proceed until the stop of the world and in this lite the words of Christ become articulate: "Lo, I am with y'all, even unto the end of the globe. Amen". Apostolic Succession carries the living Church from generation to generation.

Deacons, Priests, Bishops

In the beginning the Apostles only needed administration to perform minor duties. They chose 7 deacons. Seven persons of strong religion were ordained. The apostles through prayer and past placing their hands on the 7 persons transferred graces of the Holy Spirit to a pocket-size degree. (Acts6, 6).

Subsequently the apostles established PRESBYTERS (Greek word pregnant priest in English). Presbyters or priests had more than duties to perform than did the deacons. Finally the Apostles ordained BISHOPS for the Church. Every bit examples at that place was ordained a bishop for the town of the Ephesians called Timothy (i Tim.ane,3), and another at Crete called Titus. (Titus1,five) . But BISHOPS received the full graces and became replacements of the Apostles. Simply Bishops could ordain Deacons, Priests, and other Bishops as the need arose. "For this crusade left I thee in Crete, that 1000 shouldest prepare in guild the things that are wanting, and ordain presbyters in every city, as I had appointed thee," wrote St. Paul to Bishop Titus (Titus1,5).

In our day, every priest is but an extension of his bishop. Every local parish priest performs his duties and receives his authority only from his bishop. In larger parishes, deacons are needed to perform lesser sacred duties than the priest by authority of the priest.

Beside the power to ordain, bishops also received power from the apostles to guess deacons, priests: "Against a presbyter receive not an accusation, but earlier ii or iii witnesses." (one Tim. 5,19) ; to rebuke sinners: "Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fearfulness." (ane Tim. 5, xx) ; to honor the worthy: "Let the presbyters that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the give-and-take and doctrine." (1 Tim. 5, 17); turn down heretics: "A man that is an heretic later on the first and second admonition pass up." (Tit. three, 10);

The Apostles gave Bishops and priests the right to teach in the Church: "Preach the discussion; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine." (2 Tim.4, 2). From the Apostles the Bishops and priests received the power and grace to perform the Sacraments, sacramentals and all other services: "Is any sick among you let him telephone call for the presbyters of the Church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the proper name of the Lord." (James5, xiv) or "I exhort therefore, that, beginning of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of cheers, be fabricated for all men; for kings and for all that are in authorisation; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty . . . For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior." (1 Tim.2, one-3).

The apostles likewise gave Bishops and priests the right to administer and govern the Holy Orthodox Church building: "The presbyters among you I exhort, who am also a presbyter, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the celebrity that shall be revealed; Feed the flock of God which is amidst you, taking the oversight thereof, non by constraint, simply willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind." (i Peter5, 1-ii).

No pastor can be a shepherd who follows the sheep. The sheep must follow the pastor and know his vox, and listen to it. Those falling from the truth must be lifted, and those following ungodly ways must be rebuked. The pastor himself must constantly be a good example to his flock: "These things speak and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee." (Tit. two, 15).

OBEYING PASTORS

Later establishing the hierarchal structure of the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the Apostles commanded of the faithful obedience to the didactics and respect for the function of the deacons, priests, and bishops. The private shortcomings of any pastor do non lessen the effects of any Sacraments performed past him. "Obey them that have the rule over yous, and submit yourselves: for they picket for your souls, equally they that must give account, that they may exercise it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you." (Heb.xiii, 17). Or as St. Paul writes: "And we beseech y'all brethren, to know them which labor amongst you, and are over you in the Lord, and chide you lot; and to esteem them very highly in dearest for their works sake. And be at peace amid yourselves." (i The.5, 12-13). For those who constantly notice error with pastors let this text wake them from their slumber: "Verily, verily I say unto you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth Me" (John thirteen, twenty), or "He that heareth you heareth Me; and he that despiseth you despiseth Me; and he that despiseth Me despiseth Him that sent Me." (Luke ten, 16).

And so deacons, priests, and bishops shall continue to be ordained and receive the graces of Pentecost in an unbroken line from the Apostles even unto the end of the world and wherever they are at present or tomorrow, Christ will exist there amongst them.

I think the key point beingness missed here is that bishops and priests are not more than meritorious than laymen, but are set autonomously for specific duties -- and those duties differ between priests, bishops, and deacons. The apostles set apart a group of elders to lead the church in each major metropolis (metropolis), with individual elders going out to minister to the 'suburbs' and rural populace in the smaller towns and crossroads surrounding information technology. Very early, the leader amidst the elders causeless the rule of overseeing their work and coordinating who did what, and then that no elderberry was overworked and all the people were duly ministered to. That role became the bishop, the elders becoming the priests (both priest and elder mean presbyter, one being a clipping of the original Greek word and the other a directly translation).

"Priest" has a sorry history of being used both to translate presbyterios, "elder" and hierius, person offering sacrifice at a Jewish or pagan altar. The "imperial priesthood" passage referencing all Christians means that nosotros are all sons of God entitled to practice what only the descendants of Aaron could under the Old Covenant; it has nothing to do with the effective management of the church building to accomplish those purposes for which Christ ordained information technology.

As for the apostolic succession, the chip nigh "descendants of Peter" that purshed christianmomof3'southward buttons to raise this issue in the first place, we are all (in the apostolic churches) within it -- merely the bishops are the ones charged with handing it down. To take 1 lineage I know fairly well, Jesus set apart John as Apostle, John ordained my namesake Polycarp every bit bishop, Polycarp ordained Irenaeus, and he other bishops who in sequence concluded up ordaining Theodore of Tarsus, who was sent as the 6th Archbishop of Canterbury. He ordained the hereafter next Archbishop as bishop, and and so on, until nosotros become downwards to the Archbishop in the tardily 1780s who ordained William White who became first Presiding Bishop of the new American Episcopal Church building. He in turn ordained other bishops who in sequence becape P.B.'s and eventually 1 of them ordained Ned Cole Jr. equally Bishop of Centrl New York -- and he in turn confirmed me when I became an Episcopalian. Nosotros laymen and the priests participate in the lineage dating back to the apostles; information technology's only that information technology's entrusted to the bishops to exist the ones passing it on down through the ages.

As for the titles, everybody has means of honoring people. They're in general not different ranks, merely special names for special jobs or ways to requite recognition. For example, "Monsignor' is a way the Catholics recognize an older priest with years of service who is not a practiced ambassador and therefore not likely to become a bishop -- much similar a Protestant church might laurels its longtime pastor by naming him "Senior Pastor" in recognition of his years of service.

Some of the other special stuff:

• The Archdeacon is the priest who is the bishop'south assistant charged with ensuring the small rural communities are properly pastored.
• In that location are ii kinds of Deans. First, the cathedral is the bishop'due south own church, the one he is pastor of. Simply patently he cannod devote all his time to pastoring it. So he names a priest Cathedral Dean to exist its effective pastor in his stead.
• Also, contemplate a diocese of 10 counties or and then. The parishes in each county may work together on local joint programs. The seinor among the priests serving them is the "Rural Dean" with the chore of bringing them together to plan such programs, etc.
• Cathedrals existence by and large big churches, and dicoeses having various activities, some priests are employed as Canons to assist the Cathedral Dean and/or to head upwards, e.g., the diocesan youth ministry, the recruitment and preparation of new clergy, social outreach programs, etc.
• Archbishops are bishops who head upwards national churches or the church in parts of larger countries. They have some strictly divers duties toward and authority over the dioceses and bishops in their archdiocese.
• Amongst the Catholics, certain bishops are named as Cardinals -- which is both an honor and gives them the duty of electing a new Pope when the Pope dies.
• The Orthodox have their own vocabulary. A Metropolitan, for example, is an Orthodox Archbishop. You've got me what an Archimandrate or an Archpriest might be. (A Hieromonk is a monk who has been named bishop, FWIW.)

9. nice job:thumbsup:

10. to teach and spread the Discussion in the manner Christ has chosen.
So his teaching wouldn't be some gratuitous for all.
11. Well, now we likewise know, if we didn't before, why they wrote information technology down.
12. Thanks!
13. Timothy and Titus have been called pastors, elders, bishops, and apostles (not Apostles, but apostles equally in missionaries) by diverse groups. Unfortunately, the Bible does not ascribe any task title to either man.
14. In light of the fact that presbyteros and episkopos are used interchangeably in the Bible to describe the aforementioned function, do yous know when these two terms began to receive separate meanings?
15. Whatever happened to elders if now you only have deacons, bishops and priests and where did priests come from?
16. How does Titus (not to mention Barnabas and the multitude of others that Paul worked with) fit into this film? It seems pretty impressive that Timothy, of them all, would be elevated to being an Apostle.
17. Okay, you lot have bishops and priests, but no elders. What happened to the elders (presbyteros, episkopos)?

Nitpick -- to describe the same people every bit church leaders. As noted by others, the likelihood is that the ii offices were only gradually, over the first generation or so of Christian growth across the Roman Empire, distinguished from each other. The elders of a local church were its overseers; the Overseer, as the chief of the elders, was an early develoment from this. Trying to apply medieval or modern distinctions and saying "Luke says they're the same thing!"/"Well, Paul says they're non!" to it is anachronistic, IMHO.

She has an e[piskopos and presbyterioi -- and, as I noted above, whether you use the English clipping of the Greek word or the literal translation, it means the aforementioned thing.
